Abstract

During the fourth century BC the Greek cavalry had a secondary role against the preponderance of hoplites. Xenophon was the main precursor of an empowerment of this, proposing through his various works reforms that seek to increase its capabilities and importance in battle. In order to determine what contributions, he makes to the formation of Greek horses and riders, we analyze two of his minor works: "On Horsemanship" and "Hipparch". From this study we can obtain Xenophon's proposals for the revival of cavalry, which would achieve its heyday at the hand of Alexander the Great.
